The Canvas of Life
In the quiet village of Shuanglang, Yunnan, 92-year-old Wang Bingxiu reflects on a life shaped by tradition, resilience, and unexpected transformations. From enduring the hardships of arranged marriage and raising seven children through her embroidery work, to serving her community as a midwife and local representative, Wang’s story is one of perseverance against the odds. Yet, her most renowned chapter began late in life—when, at the age of 78, she picked up a paintbrush for the first time under the guidance of her teacher, Mr. Shen Jianhua. What started as a simple lesson would unfold into a powerful way of telling her story.
The Canvas of Life is a student documentary entirely produced, directed, and edited by Joanna Chang. The film was awarded the Best Chinese Short Documentary at the 2025 Toronto Chinese Canadian Film Festival.
